Book - The Namesake

This is the book recently I have read.

The writer is Jhumpha Lahiri. There is a movie made based on the novel with the same name.

I liked the book. The writer is very descriptive in writing. She creates entire picture with minute details of the things, you actually get the feel like seeing the entire scene.

One more admirable thing is flow of story & interesting transition of story narration from one character to another. The story is carefully woven & flows from one character to another smoothly & eventually return to the GOGOL.

The story catches the life of Bengali couple moved from their native place to US & raising their children amongst the different lifestyle. On the birth of their son, they faced dilemma of naming him as the letter containing the name of son (from Grand Mother) not reached to US. The first name occurred to his father become his name i.e. GOGOL, later to be changed with some good name. However name remains. The boy grows up & frustrated with his awkward name go for changing name. His life journey of adulthood, love affairs, marriage, divorce etc is narrated further.

The book is delight to read for its fine descriptions, narrations & unusual turns of events,

Total U-Turn

I have started the blog “I wish to write on” thinking that I will write my thoughts on various subjects & interests. I am not able to write anything specific or special, so I decided to be reviewer. I decided to write some comments on various books / movies / any thing which I read / watch / go through. I think this is total u-turn instead of contributing; I am now on to commenting.

I hope this will make me more productive for blog,

With love,

Book - "Death Be Not Proud" - Memoir by John Gunther

I thank my colleague for giving me this book for reading.

This is one of the good books I have ever read.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Johny Gunther, teenaged son of the author. Johny was detected brain cancer & that time there was no hope for him to survive.

The book is narrative of life span of Johny from detection of cancer till his last goodbye.

At the start of the book, I felt that author is exaggerating the character of Johny (since he is his child). However while reading further I felt that he was rather modest.

The author has restricted himself and narrated the entire experience as detached person. I really admired his writing. We cannot understand the feelings which author was going through that period. He is able to suppress his feelings in his writing and accounted the journey with total flow.

Johny fought the battle bravely & even though he lost the battle he won everything. To understand this you have to read the book.

The last not the least, the last few pages written by his mother is must read for all parents.
She says that “She wished that she loved more Johny”. Surely she loved Johny too much but still feels that she could have given more love to him. She mentioned that when she sees parents are shouting / scolding their child/s or frustrated by their own child/s, she says at least they are alive, don’t treat them like that, please love them. Give more & more love to you child.

Welcome to the "Stock" Market!!!!!

Hi guys,
Another interesting email received :-

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for Rs10.The villagers started catching the monkeys. The man bought thousands of monkeys at Rs10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy at Rs20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to Rs25 and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at Rs50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers "Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at Rs35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell it to him for Rs50."The villagers squeezed up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys. Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere!!!Welcome to the "Stock" Market!!!!!

Simple Exercise

I have been to one of the class of personality Development long back,

There were some simple exercises what we called as self introspection:-

----
We have been told to follow the instructions as give below :-

(Materials required : - Plain Paper & pen)

Write down in plain paper :-

1) What are my strong points
( like good nature, good look, good family, good knowledge in particular area, good in mathematics / accounts, good communicator, good friend circle, ability to adjust, ability to make friends etc. etc..)

2) What are my weak points
(like English speaking, physical appearance, negative feelings, consciousness, unable to make friends, lack of financial support, family background, lack of education / knowledge, strained relation ship etc. etc.)

Actually, we were able to write down strong point in a minute but for 2nd portion we were go on writing page. Our instructor has to stopped us. So much to write…

Next part was to write down :-

5 /10 Most happiest things happened in my life

5 / 10 Most dreadful things happened in my life

We are surprised and really amused on reprising our life. Various thoughts were coming & we find difficult to sum up the things. At last we made the list. On reading the first portion, feeling of sure joy & happiness arouse and for 2nd portion, we are feeling sad but thought that it happened & there is no escape but to accept it as it is. Thank God its over.

Then come the interesting part

1) What are you today?

2) What you want to achieve during your lifetime? What are your targets?

(Targets may be in the nature of learning driving, new business, new job, swimming, proper / fluent English, marriage, car purchase, home purchase, foreign trip, vacation, new hobby, applying for passport, enrolling / completing any qualifications, any thing , whatever comes to your mind).

On completion of the 2nd list,

We have been asked to segregate all the targets under following heads:-

1) Targets which we want to achieve within 1 year
2) Targets which we want to achieve within 5 years
3) Targets which we want to achieve within 10 years
4) Targets which we want to achieve within 20 years

The results give us the clear road map for our future,

I have in my hand my targets for current year & what I should plan now onwards for 5 years, things I should think over for next decades.

I know my top priorities, things I should be worry little, things I should avoid, the things, which I should not avoid. I know the ENDS I have to follow the path by proper planning.

Now, I have to plan the work & work the plan.

---

After writing this, I have decided to take the above exercise once again and see what happens next, possibly I may share with you my targets for next year in my future blogs,

I request you to please you too do the above exercise with your dear & near ones or alone, you will be amazed by the results. Be fair, critical & positive.

With love,

Khushal

Money, Vices or virtues

Recently, I have read various books written on positive thinking, how to become millionaire, how to make friends etc. etc..

I really like these books, apart from that I found that authors of the books are writing very rationally, practically and proves their point with example. They treat the thing on its face value. What they write is about real life problem & probable solutions.

I am not naming any books but like to express my general opinion about its contents.

First thing first they asked us 1) Where are you now? & 2) where you want to reach?

As an Indian, we worship “Lakshmi Devi” but in the mind of mind, we think that more money means more vices.

Is it the situation? Most of us, who has “rich neighbors / relatives” as compared to us, will complain that he / she is making money by using wrong tactics / illegal means.

We seldom find (as per our thinking) a millionaire & still kind and noble person. In fact, we have ‘n’ no. of examples of people who change their attitude with the increase of their wealth.

This does mean that never earn too much money?

I think otherwise. I really appreciate the person who build the enterprise, big business, or who overcame from his poor background to stability. Examples are endless, Mr. Naryan Murthi, Late Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani, Mr.Shah Rukh Khan etc..

Back to our topic.

What I like about this books is that they tell us that you want to become happy and wants you to accept that you like to have lots of money. You want to grow up to higher ladder.

This is the fact.

We know we can’t buy happiness through money but still having money will at least ease our life. We never accept in open that we want money. Yes we want money, not only sufficient money but excess money to fulfill our dreams, desire, requirements, best education to our children, security to our family, charity, show off etc.

These books say accept that you want money & lots of money and that Lots of money will come only if you plan & work in right direction & full dedication. You have to work hard, toil yourself, make sacrifices to reach the position where you want to go. For example, you want to increase your income, start working extra after office hours by sacrificing your leasure time or start any side business which cost times & capital.

We have to think logically, clearly and work accordingly. It is not easy but our perception needs to be changed.

In any case, I wish to earn money, big money, through right means (only). I hope, I succeed.

Wish good luck to me & I Wish good luck to you too.

The tale of The Donkey

There is one very good & intersting story for all of us:-

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. Error! Unknown switch argument. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.

At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well.

He was astonished at what he saw.. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

MORAL : Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.

2. Free your mind from worries - Most never happens.

3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.

4. Give more.

5. Expect less from people but more from God.

PRAY & YOU WILL FIND THE WAY!

PRAY AND YOU WILL FIND THE WAY!! THAT IS SURE!!!

Resemblense of my look with others

It is common thing. People who met first time find some resemblance of other persons’s face with some known figure or their friends / relatives. Current example is Harmaj Baweja constantly remind us Hrithik Roshan due to similarity of their look. You may have also encountered such things.

Although strange, I had ‘n’ number of instances where my looks resemblance is pointed out by others. I like to just review these memories,

While I was around 8-10 years old, one of our relative’s son visited my house. I was gone out. Since he had also of my age, he just gone out with my brother for playing with my friends. Most of my friends thought that I had came to play with them. His physics and facial features were very much similar to mine. Next day, all the friends told me the story of my duplicate.

The second incidence, which comes to mind, is that once I was on visit to village of my friend. We are at his brother’s house for a night. I realize that his sister in law was curiously looking at me. I thought might be this is normal curiosity for guests. She was taking great care of us. At the time of dinner, she ultimately informed all of us that I am exactly looking like her cousin brother / some distant relative. Then I understand the reasons behind her curiosity.

Next one is solid. HE was just living in nearby area. HIS height, hairstyle was almost like mine. My brother has first spotted HIM at “Navratri” Festival. He was very amused to see him. My brother asked me to join him next day to have look at HIM. Next 2 day HE had not come. At last, I have seen HIM, HE was different but not very much. We exchanged smile that’s it. It’s OK for us. We never became friends but we know each other. My younger sister always told that whenever she saw him, she thought that HE is me. Right now, I don’t’ know where HE is but when last time I have seen HIM, HE has muscled up HIS body and looked quite good.

Once while I was coming out exams hall., the supervisor of our class asked me to wait outside , he wanted to talk to me. At outside, he told me that I looked exactly like his friend even while writing paper the way I was writing, thinking, behaving and everything reminded of his friend.

There is one more cases where one of my colleague at Pune told me I look one of his friend.

One more, while I was studying my ICWAI, my friend told me that one of his neighbour is not only look like me but talks in the same fashion as I do. I asked him to bring that man at class any day so that we can meet.

There are other incidences too but I think this much is sufficient.

So, I am the most common average looking person and Hey.. I am really enjoying it and happy about it.

"AAMIR" The movie

I have read the review of "Aamir" movie in Hindustan Times, where Mr.Khalid Mohd. has given good review.

Normally Mr. Khalid Mohd. is very harsh film critic. Therefore, I thought this movie should be good.

It happened one day, I got to see the movie “Aamir”.

It was damn good movie. Great script, good direction and fast speed of movie alongwith superb acting by its main lead Mr.Rajiv Khandelwal.

The story is very simple but very gripping.

An NRI returned “Muslim” Doctor on arrival of India learns that his family is kidnapped. He receives instruction through mobile (“incoming only”) and have to follow the same to save the life of his family. He has to run here and there as guided through mobile (caller – unidentified till the end) and have to obey orders to save the day. His each move is known to the caller.

His journey starts from Airport to various Muslim dominated parts of Mumbai and end at Bus with red Briefcase containing (guess what!) a bomb.

Aamir mean the leader. He is to lead the "Jehad". People all over world is supporting for the cause.

The caller explains him that the whole journey to various areas of Mumbai is to make aware how people of his religion are living in such sorrow state. Every one is against the Muslims and they have been subject to miserable life here. He is to take the lead and fight against the system.

Aamir argues with the caller that if he is able to become doctor and lead the comfortable life why not the other Muslims. There is equal opportunity to everyone and war / terrorism is not the solution. There is very good dialect in each piece regarding this issue.

The end of the story is terrific.

Must watch movies for all.

KAI-ZEN

Dear friends,

This is one of the most useful terms I came across when I was studying ICWAI.

This is Japanese terms which means just little more improvement every time. In wikipedia Kai zen refers to Japanese philosophy where there is constant improvement in product through out the life.

The fundamental idea of this philosophy is that it is not possible every time to invent new thing or discover new method / strategy to do something. It requires lots of R&D, talent, time, resources & even if discovered will take time to be accepted by / feasible for common persons.

Instead of this, efforts should be made to improvise the already discovered product / method by studying its all components. Take e.g. Washing Machine. Now washing machine is discovered and easily available. Scientists still can discover a machine which can give better washing & cleaning by using alternative methods or creating entirely new system. However it will take lots of resources, like money, men hours, capital, trials etc.

Now, scientists are trying to improvise the existing Washing Machine, like making it automatic, making it less power / water consuming, good washing results etc.

Kai zen involves considering the process & results of activities.

It involves systamatic analysis of all the process activities and it resultant impacts on actual result. Now plans are made to improve the process activities by removing unnecessary elements thereby improving the results with lesser efforts.

When I was taught about this subject, I was constantly thinking about changing just little things of various so that it functions are improved or at least cost are reduced.

While coming back home, I observed the Conductor of bus. He was multitasking issuing tickets, collecting cash, directing driver, people etc. I started thinking how Kai zen can help him. First it strike to me that, there should be some system so that he can issue tickets easily. I could not think beyond it. There was no solution. Then I saw that he was having aluminum bag containing tickets which was very heavy. Every time he issues tickets, he lift it and then just let it go. It is heavy & definitely on leaving, dash heavily on his leg. Every day he is issuing no. of tickets & getting hurt by his own bag. I though something to be done to overcome this situation.

I thought we can apply Kai zen here, all the aluminium bag should be replaced by bag made of good plastic.

Some of the conductor covered the back portion of aluminium bag with smooth plastic so that it should not hit hard.

When I was working in Accounts dept., I have used this concept consistently and made my life easier. I remember, we have to pass at least 10-15 entries to account our salaries, but now only one entry does the trick.

I am sure you can also apply Kai zen to any activities to improve.

With best luck,

Khushal

Dont forget to wear smile

There was small interview of Mr.Sanjay Dutt, where he was asked, "you never leave home without?" , He replied," Mobile, purse etc.. and never forget to wear my smile".

I like this very much.

Smile is contagious.

I remember, one day I was feeling very depressed. I dont know everything was going wrong. I missed our contract bus. Best bus was overcrowded. Trains too were late and there was heavy rush on platefore. Somehow I got in the train and got uncomfortable 3rd seat. I was fuming and feeling vey low. Then I saw a young man standing in between our seats . He was talking on mobile and blushing, smiling. I was amazed and started enjoying the smile and postive energy generated from it.

Within few minutes, all my worries, depression was erased and I feel relieved and actually was smiling.

I thought, smile is very powerful, contagious & spread the positive energy.

I have experienced the power of it.

So, "do wear your smile" wherever you are.

With love,

Toto Chan

There is one wonderful book in our Hindi Library, titled "Toto Chan".

This carries positive energy. This book is written by Japanese Writer "Toto Chan" & translated in Hindi keeping its heart as it is.

I loved this book very much, I don't know why but it gives me positive vibes & there was constant feeling of happiness while reading.

The book is about a little girl (writer) Toto Chan, who is very different & is being expelled from the school as she is not concentrating on studies. Now she is being registered at new School, where there is no standard class room ( rather their class is inside railway wagon), no set curriculum, no fixed subjects, no separate classes. The books goes on narrating her experience of new school.

It is worth reading.

Have time, get hold of the book & enjoy the journey of little "Toto Chan".

Government Employee? Huh..

I have some problems with this post, I am unable to convert some of the words to Hindi, but I can't wait too long to publish this post, so sorry for inconvenience & forgive me for jumbling words, I hope you dont' mind it.

One more interesting conversation in train with Mr. Amit.

Amit one of my friend from our train group, working with Tax consultant & always cursing Govt. Employees. One day, I thought enough is enough, I being working in Public Sector, decided to confront him.

Our discussion begins:-

Thanks अमित, फॉर opening my eyes,

Interpretation

I am not able to decide upon title, Lets begin writing rather than thinking about title,

During my school days, I used to attend Shakha. Shakha is where RSS members meet everyday at morning / evening for exercise & other activities. I was never active member but like to attend shakha for daily exercising.

Every Sunday, we member come together & discuss various current topics.

On particular Sunday, we had discussion (where I was silent listener) which stick to my mind forever. The discussion was about : what comes first, yourself or your country. The person (we will call him = Mr. x) was very good orator & brought the point with some examples.

Mr. x was telling, you should always remember that you come after your country. Your country's pride should be ultimate than your personal glory / value / pride.

Hi cited examples from Mahabharat war (the great Indian epic), where the battle was won by the party who has keep country (here =धर्म) before themselves.

He illustrated further :=

Guruji of all greatest warriors, Drona, had attachment with his Son "Ashwathama". Ashwathama was blessed with infinite life. Even knowing that when Drona heard that "Ashwathama" got killed during the war, he felt heavy grief. He stopped fighting & become anxious. On confirming from Yudhisthir (who never lied ) he broke down & get killed.

On the other side, the Yudhisthir, whose fame for truthfulness, taken the weaker stand & instead of truth he told "Naro va Kunjra va" . = "Ashwathama Killed but whether man or elephant not known".

Karan, the greatest warrior from Kaurav side, was famous for his generosity, any one can fulfilled his wish if he asks to Karan. Karan knew that Indra wants his "Kavach Kundal" so that Arjun can kill him in war. Even though to keep his personal tag of " Greatest Daanvir" he gives away his "Kavach Kundal" & got killed in the war.

War result could have been changed had he not given away the "Kavach Kundal".

On the other side, i.e. of Pandav, which is said to be fighting war for Dharma, the Arjun killed the Karan while he was trying to fix the wheel of his chariot. As per rule of the war at that time, Arjun should not have attack the Karan at that time. But Krishna insisted that don't think about what is good or bad, if you have to win the war, it is the only opportunity to kill Karan, so go ahead.

Another great great Warrior from Kaurav Side, Bhisma, also followed his own wisdom & preferences instead of adhering to war conditions. He has decided not to fight against female & never fought ( he was unmarried). During the war, when it was impossible to stop him, the pandavs & Krishna hatched plan. With Arujna, the Shikhandi (half male - half female) was accompanied in his chariot. When Bhisma saw that Arjun is hiding behind Shikhandi, he stopped fighting with him. Bhisma could have still carry on the march but due to his own beliefs & fundas, stopped the war at his end. Arjuna got the free hand & with rain of arches he killed Bhisma.

The Krishna has promised that he will not participate in war as warrior or take arms in hands during the war. But at one point of time where Arjun was not ready to attack, he broke his promise & lift the wheel of chariot & was about to attack.

Bheem too broke the rules of fighting by hitting Duryodhan at the forbidden places & killed him.

The win was called as the Victory of good over bad.

There were promises broken, rules broken but the ultimate aim was achieved by Pandavs.

Therefore, what lessons we learn from this that put your country before yourself.

I was really amazed by this interpretations. I always thought that Pandavs & Krishna are right & are doing all correct & right things.

Any how, interpretation was not important, important was the lesson.

I have to curtail all this to complete my works on time.

Hope I follow,

Bus Blues

On 09/06/2008, I was coming to Andheri Station by 319 Bus from our area. It was raining & atmosphere was quite cool. Since I took the bus from starting point I was comfortably seated & enjoying the bus commuting.

At Sakinaka, lots of people entered the bus. No. of people were standing, suddenly a felt that water drop fallen on my hand. I thought this may be from the umbrella of the person who is standing near me. But to my surprise, he was not having the umbrella. He was sweating. He was sweating profusely & every now & then I felt his perspiration. I was wondering why he was sweating so much, whether is too cool & comfortable.

Suddenly I thought he might have done some crime & running from that scene or he may be having explosive with him. I was shocked & started observing him carefully. I tried to remember his face, body structure & also noticing his behaviour, his bag. He was constantly wiping his sweats.

At that moment, I realised that what will happened if he was human bomb. In the next few minutes this bus will go blast & lots of lives will lost including mine. I was terrified to the core of my heart thinking what will happen to my family if disaster strike. I was just counting how much they will get from my LIC & PA policy, whether it will be enough for them to live? I don't know what was exactly going on my mind.

I saw that he was carrying a thin plastic bag & after careful observation of it I felt that most probably bomb could not be carried in this bag. As it happen, just after two stops, the strange man move forward & get down from the bus. I have kept eyes on him & his bag till the time he exit.

Luckily nothing that sort of things happen. I felt greatly relieved.

I don't know how but, even while writing about this incidence I really feel terror in my heart. I know, we are not safe, any thing can happen.

I know our destiny is pre-determined.

Lets hope for the best for all.

Never say never die.

I always decide to keep on writing. Every year from 1st jan, I wanted to maintain diary for daily event. I have started blogging thinking that atleast I will post one post per day. This is like every winter I swear to start exercise and after few days, you are on a same old track. Really lack of discipline always creeps in. It prevents me or for that matter any person from achieving his / her goals. I dont know why I am so relaxed or lazy. Something is to be done. I have to chalk out plan for the day with "must do" things & must work to do it.

I know nothing is impossible,

This one, in advance before birth of my daughter, from Naresh,

This is lovely & most touchy from SHAAN,

"Congratulations on becoming a father of an angel"

This is very fine message received on my birthday from Ashwini,

This is from Yogesh on my promotion,

"Life is an echo, all comes back. The good, The bad, The false, The true; so give the world the best u have. And the best will come back 2 U. Cngrts on getting promoted."

NIDHI, MY DARLING,

I love Nidhi so much,

On this weekend, I have gala time with NIDHI, we played, we fought, we laughed, we did everything having fun.

NIDHI is my 2 1/2 year daughter.

Instead of playing with her, I prefer to watch her. She do every nakhara & masti. Me & my wife just not get enough of her.

We love her too much.

On her birth I got sms from one of my friend which reads " Congratulations on becoming father of an angel". Really she is our angel. Without her, our relationships were incomplete.

We call her apple, chiku, chiki, jannu, darling, malai barfi, ladu, ice creame, nidhi, nidhu darling & so on & so on.

Thank GOD for such lovely, beautiful, mastikhor, angel - NIDHI.

Honesty is the Best policy

Hi,
On this Thursday (22/05/2008), a meeting was scheduled with our client. The time was not known to me. I have already informed about the same to my wife. On Wednesday, she was not feeling well. At morning on Thursday I asked her, what should I do, should I stay back or go to office (as meeting was scheduled). She told me since you have to attend the meeting you should go.

In the office I have contacted our representative & asked about meeting. He was not knowing it & assured me to check up & inform accordingly. Till evening I was not able to get the confirmation & thus at last I came to know that meeting was already taken place & there is no need to attend the same by us. I as surprised & felt sorry for my wife.

At around 5.oo p.m., I have contacted her & asked about her health & also told
her that somehow meeting was not on & it is cancelled. I expect that she will start blaming me, but to my pleasant surprise she says she is okay with it. Since I was not aware about it further I could easily make her fool by telling that I had meeting etc. etc. But since I have told her truth she was very happy.

I feel greatly relieved with her reaction.

Now I believe that Honesty is the Best Policy.

2nd Day

I really like to continue to blogging.

I am planning to enter into share markets but have little apprehensions. Stcok market offers highest rate of returns if you study properly & make deals at right time. I foresee good future but lack of time & access to market at right time may not yield best results,

Lets see what is in store,
Bye,

My First Post

Hi,

I know I am writing for myself only, so Hi is meant for Me & my friends who may see this post.

This is my first attempt (rather second, first attempt was just trying & leaving as it is) & as name suggest I wish to write, Yes I wish to write down my thoughts.

Yesterday, I was awake at 3.40 a.m. for preparing milk for my daughter. After that I could not sleep till 6.00 a.m.. Lots of things are coming to my mind & kept me thinking & planning.

I was planning to help my brother my asking him to buy (ofcourse with my financial help) xerox machine & start that business. There is an ample opportunity for this business as only one or two shops are there for xeroxing.

I was also planning to start work for writing accounts for Housing societies on weekdays to start earning extra income.

On this line of thought, it sparks me that I can ask Prasad to develop customise software to handle this work & we can sell to 'n' number of societies.

So on & so on, I was too excited but decided to get some sleep so that next day I should be able to work.

Over for today.

With Love,

Khushal
